Terra Cognita

Isn't the internet grand? All of these clever tools at my insomniac disposal. But geez, I have a lot of territory left to cover. Maybe I will get to Mexico in the spring.

This map doesn't quite include everything -- there are some small independent islands in the Caribbean I've visited (St Lucia, Dominica) that don't show up. The map gizmo at World66 includes them, but its output isn't as pretty.

I've gone by the rule that airports don't count, so that excludes Taiwan and Fiji for me. Also, Sweden is arguable, as I only drove through and never spent a night. There's a limit to how much a map like this is worth, and that's it, right there.

Have you actually been to Svalbard, or were those islands colored in by virtue of your having been to mainland Norway?

No Costa Rica? You need to get yourself down there... Beautiful!

No, Svalbard comes along with Norway, just like I haven't been to Alaska or anywhere north of 55 N in Canada, or Kalimantan or Manchuria or Xinjiang.

It would be interesting to try to colour in only the places I've actually been -- maybe a Google Maps hack could do it? Or I suppose I could load a map image into the Gimp and go at it by hand. Tricky, though, without more landmarks on the map. The result would be be significantly less red, for sure.

Yes   No   (like the Turing Test, but easier)
